The Only Limit is Your Own Imagination

Listen to Mustn’ts, child, listen to the Don’ts.
Listen to the Shouldn’ts, the Impossibles, the Won’ts.
Listen to the Never Haves, then listen close to me.
Anything can happen, child, Anything can be.

Yesterday actress and activist Holly Robinson Peete’s twins turned fifteen. Her son in this boy-girl pair of twins, Rodney Jr, has autism. He was diagnosed at age three. Robinson Peete (who is the wife of former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete) tweeted yesterday:

When my son was 3 I was told he’d never talk. He turns 15 this week & just told me he was proud I was “getting my workout in”#autism#HOPE

For full disclosure, I was never told that The Princess would never do something or other. Although she is still not speaking at age 6, overall, her communication has improved. While still not potty-trained, she is showing some minor progresses here and there. And while I’m committed to not being upset if she does not meet these milestones, I also refuse to believe they are impossible either.

Life with autism is a marathon, not a sprint. And we never know what is just around the next corner, so we always stay vigilant. And there will never be an “expert” on autism as it affects every person differently. Your child is the only expert you need to be concerned with following. Which is why you cannot ever think there is a surefire be it diet, therapy or whatever that will magically make things disappear. It is why we must all pursue what we feel is best and working. It is why we should never, no matter how tempting, compare our child’s progress with anothers.

Our children are full of possibilities. Full of hope. And if we believe there are arbitrary limits placed on them, well, we have ignored the potential within.
