Dealing with Realities and Literal Children

30 May

Recently a friend’s son had to deal with the loss of a grandparent and a pet. It was not a great situation under the most normal of circumstances, but the fact that he has autism and extremely literal, made things all the more difficult.

I don’t have any answers on how to approach death with any child, much less one with autism who deal with the world in black and white.

We know and understand not to use idioms and sarcasm around individuals with autism, but in dealing with very real situations and how to explain them…there are no hard and fast rules. And unfortunately the ones who suffer this time the most, are our children and adults with ASD.
